Last Thursday, the CivxNow Coalition hosted its first-ever Hill Day in the nation’s Capital. Fifty civic learning advocates visited 40 congressional offices to make the case for sustainable, and ultimately, a generational investment in K–12 students’ civic development. In an era where everything and everyone seems deeply polarized, how does a field maintain its sense of positivity, integrity, and viewpoint diversity? That was the high bar we set for this year’s Civic Learning Week, and we are proud to say the field rose to and far exceeded it.
Civics was all over the news this month, thanks to dozens and dozens of Civic Learning Week stories and coalition efforts to place at least 20 op-eds across the country. In fact, more than 1,100 media placements alongside more than 140 social media mentions generated a reach of more than 1 billion! Following are some highlights:
- New Jersey’s coalition shared its opinion on civics in The Newark Star Ledger
- Wisconsin’s coalition worked with two former state senators on this op-ed in The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
- The Annenberg Institute for Civics took center stage on the opinion page of The Philadelphia Inquirer
- California’s State Board of Education showed its support for civics in The 74 Million
