Civics Education: The Unsung Guardian of Democracy

All Resources

Abstract:

This Article argues comprehensive civics education is a critical yet underfunded and undervalued element of American public education, essential for safeguarding democratic participation and the right to vote. The Article explores how the systematic neglect of civics education- evident in disproportionate funding compared to STEM education, limited curricular standards, and policy choices shaped by federal regulations – has contributed to widespread political ignorance, disinformation vulnerability, and declining civic engagement among American youth. Through analysis of voter turnout trends, youth activism, and educational case law, the Article demonstrates current efforts to bolster civic readiness, while valuable, are insufficient. This Article calls for renewed investment in civics curricular, emphasizing the integration of media literacy, digital equity, project-based learning, and controversial issue discussions in classrooms. Without robust, accessible, and mandatory civics education, the foundational mechanisms of American democracy are at risk.
