At the Democracy at a Crossroads Summit, we explored how to provide civic literacy to sustain our democracy in today’s context. An agreement was found in a broad program encompassing civic knowledge, skills, dispositions and action civics, as well as one that supports infusing civics within other disciplines such as English Language Arts, math and science. In addition, consensus was found for civics to be more broadly integrated into the culture of our nation’s schools.
Innovation in all of those areas is critical to ensure that the tools teachers use actually engage students with the subject rather than discourage new generations of citizens. We will foster opportunities to further the conversation about the best measures for impact in the field.
